new job :)

Hello Fellow Transitioners!

I started a new job as a part-time secretary at the Reformed Church of the Tarrytowns a couple of weeks ago. My MS Office 2007 skills, i.e., Word and Excel, are coming in handy. I'm in the office during the summer on Tuesdays-Thursdays, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. If you're in the area, stop by to say hello. The church is on North Broadway next to the post office.

"Peace out," Susan

Wrap Up

Hi. Sorry I haven't blogged in the last 2 weeks. It's been a whirlwind: We had our mock interviews on 2/26, then we finished reviewing Excel, then we had a major snow storm, then we went on to learn PowerPoint, then we prepared our presentations, then we gave our presentations, and then we had a graduation ceremony ... whew!
We all signed up to meet with Carol next week, so she can help us with our job searches. I wish everyone all the best. It's been great getting to know you these past 7 weeks. As Ashleigh taught us to say during her presentation on Italy, "Arrivederci!"

24 February 2009

In career class today we paired up and interviewed each other using the list of questions that Ginny gave us. It was helpful to practice. On Thursday we will have our mock interviews. Everyone should wear business attire and bring their resumes. In computer class we are continuing to learn about Excel, and tomorrow we will be creating charts and other visuals.

Interviewing 101

We practiced introducing ourselves this morning by walking around the classroom and greeting each other with a smile and a firm handshake. We then practiced answering interview questions with Ginny as the interviewer. We have a list of typical interview questions that we are to answers for homework. We are also to research the companies that will be part of the mock interviews (Feb. 26).
During open lab most of us worked on our homework assignment from chapter 14, i.e., assessments 14.2-14.4 on pages 457-460 of the book and the critical thinking exercise on page 463. I'm sure we'll be reviewing this in class tomorrow.

What kind of risk taker are you?

Yesterday we had career class and open lab. We talked about risk taking, and Ginny asked us to think about what kind of risk takers we are and also what we're most afraid of. She said that sometimes you just have to do whatever it is you're afraid of. We also discussed the importance of cover letters as a tool to sell ourselves when applying for jobs. And during the open lab some of us continued to revise and revamp our resumes, while others worked on cover letters.
In computer class today we are continuing to learn about how to use Excel spreadsheets. Vicky usually explains things to us first and then we try a hands-on exercise from the book. We've gone through chapters 12 to 14 in just a couple of days. Most of the class seems to be having an easy time learning this unit ... so far.
